Can I Have a Gum Graft?
Most commonly, gums grafts are needed to fix gum recession brought on by periodontal (gum) disease. This can cause your gumline to become visibly higher and your gums to start pulling back from your teeth. Other reasons which may cause or contribute to gum recession are aggressive tooth brushing or using a bad technique, frequent jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism), and misaligned teeth. In some cases, oral piercings (such as a lip or tongue piercing) can rub against the gums and lead to recession. During a private exam, we will examine your gums and decide if you are a good candidate for gum grafts.

How Is Gum Grafting Performed?
We perform a variety of gum grafts at our Wellesley, MA office. Which one we use will be chosen based on your specific condition.
- Connective-tissue gum grafts are the most common kind used to fix root exposure. This starts by cutting an incision in the palate (roof of your mouth) to create a little flap of skin. The connective tissue is taken from inside the flap and grafted to your gums.
- Gingival grafts are comparable except that much more tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth to build up especially thin gums.
- Pedicle grafts take extra gum tissue from one area to cover your tooth roots.
During your consultation, we will work with you to help you select the type of graft best suited for your goals.
What Is Recovering From a Gum Graft Like?
After your surgery, we'll release you to go home, where you should plan to rest for a few days. We will explain your recovery instructions, such as what to eat, what to avoid, and any medications you will need to take. You may feel some discomfort or pain for a short amount of time after the surgery; this can likely be reduced with cold packs and nonprescription pain medication. To prevent damaging the grafts, you should not brush or floss while your gums are healing. We will suggest a wash to help keep your mouth fresh. You may need to return for a follow-up appointment so we can monitor your recovery and improvements.
