The strength of your jawbone is vital to your total oral health. If your jawbone is weakened from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may need a bone graft so your jaw can properly fit both dental implants and your natural teeth. Bone grafting, also known as osseous surgery, helps to reinforce and rebuild your jawbone, so it is stable enough to hold an implant. At Wellesley Aesthetic Dental Group, osseous surgery is performed on Chestnut Hill, Newton, Brookline, and surrounding area individuals to prepare the jaw for subsequent implant surgery to replace weak or missing teeth. To get more information on bone grafting, contact our Wellesley, MA dental office to schedule a consultation.
Who Can Have Bone Grafting?
If you have certain oral conditions, like gum disease, or if you've experienced a physical trauma to your mouth, you may have a weak jawbone. The jawbone may begin to atrophy (deteriorate) if you are missing one or more teeth that haven't been treated or replaced with an implant. Bone graft surgery rebuilds the jaw so it can support a dental implant; however, you will have to be patient with the process. Bone grafting can take several months to heal, but you'll get a stronger, healthier jaw that will be able to support dental implants and your natural teeth to give you a healthier mouth.

How Is a Bone Graft Performed?
The exact process of your bone grafting procedure will vary based on the source of the graft and the amount of grafting being done. The type of bone grafts performed typically include:
- Autograft: This is when bone is taken from your own body from areas like your shin, chin, or hip. This may be performed in our office with local anesthesia and sedation or at a surgical facility using general anesthesia.
- Allograft: This type of graft harvests bone from another person.
- Xenograft: Bone is taken from an animal, usually a cow, to perform this type of graft.
- Alloplast: This type of bone graft is also known as a synthetic bone graft.
At your consultative appointment, we will go into detail about your different options and help you select the best bone graft for your needs. Once your graft is ready to be placed, we will numb the needed areas and make an incision through the gums to reveal the jawbone. The prepared graft, along with collagen and proteins that stimulate growth in the graft, will be attached to the jawbone. The gums will be stitched closed, and the mouth will be cleaned.
What Is The Recovery Period Following a Bone Graft?
Over the following 6 – 9 months, the graft should heal and connect with your jaw, a process known as osseointegration. Within this time, it's important to have a proper oral care routine with brushing and flossing plus any additional products recommended by our dental team. We may prescribe antibiotics or pain medication to help subside discomfort and inflammation after the bone graft. You may have additional appointments at Wellesley Aesthetic Dental Group to check your healing and to determine when you are ready for a dental implant.
